FIBROMYALGIA & 5-HTP STUDY
In a one year study, 200 FM patients were given 400 mg of 5-HTP a day and compared to a MAOI drug (such as Nardil®) and a tricyclic antidepressant (such as Elavil®). In early FM treatment, these drugs were often given to help with the pain caused by low serotonin levels. MAOIs may elevate levels of norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine by inhibiting an enzyme called monomine oxidase. Except for some slight nausea, 5-HTP was as effective as the drugs without the serious drug side effects. In other studies, daily doses of 200 mg to 1000 mg have been given safely and effectively to address the serotonin issue in FM migraines and depression. * For informational purposes only.
Caution: If you are already taking an SSRI drug (Paxil, Prozac, etc.) you should not take 5-HTP without medical supervision, nor discontinue any SSRI or antidepressant to take 5-HTP. 5-HTP studies show that it is as effective as SSRIs without the weight gain and side effects, so ask your health care professional about making the switch.
