Q: Difference between R-ALA and ALA sold by To Your Health

A: Hello Nancy. Good question! R-alpha lipoic acid is the reduced form of this nutrient. This just means that when you take alpha lipoic acid, (ALA) your body further "reduces" or breaks down the nutrient for use in its biochemical reactions. Thus, some believe that your body can use the "R" form easier as it is in a reduced form.

Since ALA is taken primarily as an antioxidant, you'll get the benefits of ALA protection both inside and outside the cell with the"regular" form. Although not advertised as such, most ALA supplements are 50% ALA and 50% reduced (R-ALA). Expect to pay more if you do buy the R-ALA since it undergoes more processing to put it in the "reduced" form. I hope that answers your question!

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) supports liver function in 2 ways; by its antioxidant protection of cells and by its action on toxic chemicals, blood sugar and fats. Since the liver is your detoxifying organ for your body, it is key to staying healthy and decreasing the risk of developing age-related diseases,, high cholesterol and blood sugar, and fighting obesity. A: Thanks for your question! As more is known about Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), doses change. Thus, the minimum dose might be 250 ,mg day as an antioxidant. ALA has other benefits for blood sugar response and liver detox and support. Weight loss doses were up to 600 mg a day. We always suggest starting with the lowest dose first if you have never taken the product before. You will find several articles on ALA on the product page under the Articles tab. Pick the one that best describes what you are taking ALA for to read doses used in research studies for that condition. Always share your supplement use with your doctor.
