Birthday Resolutions

Posted by Margy on 1/13/2020 to From Margy's Desk
This is one of the first years that I did not make any resolutions on January 1st. Not that I tire of doing them, as I feel they set a vision for the coming 12 months. What is that saying by Lewis Carroll? If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there. And I certainly like to know where I am going!

I decided -- starting in 2020 -- to pen birthday resolutions instead since my birthday also falls in January (today to be exact). Although losing weight and exercising are two of the top 10 promises people make for the new year, they aren't on my list. Okay, maybe I should exercise more but everybody knows resolutions are not about "should do's" and more about what to get and give in life. My life. Your life.

Why Gluten Free Supplements & Skin Care?

Posted by Margy Squires on 8/24/2017 to Celiac

Loaves of BreadEver get questioned why you are gluten free? I get asked a lot, often accompanied by a look that suggests I am being health obsessive. For instance, when I won't eat a salad that is served with "only a few croutons" crowning the lettuce. People have no idea how I would love to eat that crouton! Unfortunately for me, it's a medical necessity to avoid gluten as I was diagnosed celiac several years ago. And I've been sleuthing out gluten ever since. What I put in my mouth and what I put on my skin makes all the difference to my health.

Plastic Water Bottles Can Make You Fat

Water BottleHydrate! One of the healthiest habits is to consume fresh, pure water throughout the day. But if you haven’t given up your convenient plastic water bottle for the sake of the earth, perhaps you may after you learn the link between plastic and your weight. It seems research from Health Canada is the first to show how the body metabolizes bisphenol-A (BPA) results in fat accumulation.

BPA is a chemical found in polycarbonate plastic. Among its many uses are plastic containers to store food and for beverages like water. But it does not stop there.

Margy's Favorite Skin Care

Natural skincare with research results! As a protective covering, skin is subject to damage because it is exposed to sun, wind and oxidation. With time, loss of skin collagen causes the skin to "sag", all too obvious when you look in the mirror! Since the skin is your largest organ, what you put on your skin should not be harmful as it will be absorbed. Two big offenders in skin care products are parabens (linked to cancer), and phtlates (potential disruptors of growth and reproductive hormones). While I have been careful to use products without dyes, parabens and the like, being diagnosed celiac meant I had one more ingredient to avoid: gluten. My search led me to DERMA E several years ago and after trying several of their products, I found my favorite!

Be Courageous! Change is an Action Word

There's something wonderfully comforting about knowing what comes next. The feel of your favorite chair as you relax and unwind. The smell of morning coffee. That familiar smile of a friend. A fresh, tart bite of a Granny Smith apple. Or the soft flow of notes in a sweet song. Touch. Smell. Sight. Taste. Sound. Life according to you. But what happens when, in a single moment or series of moments, life as you know it suddenly changes?

Your first impulse is resistance. Even good change pushes us outside our routine, beyond our "control zone". New can be exhilarating. However, if that something new is negative, it feels more like a roller coaster ride of unexpected twists and turns, chugging to the top and cascading to the bottom.
