Sleep for Health
Wouldn't it be great if you bounced out of bed every morning full of life and energy? Of course! But are you more likely to hit the snooze button and hope to add a few more minutes to your 6-8 hour sleep quota? Ah, but your sleep cycle does not work that way...so what to do?
Sleep is a process of cycles that your body goes through from light wakefulness to deep, restorative slumber. It's during the deeper phases of sleep that your body is able to repair, replenish and reset many of its "programming". Like refreshing your brain for next day alertness and learning. Tweaking hormone regulation, including the ones that control appetite and insulin. Boosting immunity. How well you react to emotional situations and change depends on how well you sleep, too.
In short, quality sleep helps you live a healthier and happier in life. So make sleep a priority. Set up what sleep experts call "good sleep hygiene". Sounds funny but basically it means darkening your bedroom for sleep, keeping it cool and going to bed and rising at the same times every day. Your body has a natural schedule for sleep as part of its 24 hour circadian rhythm cycle. This internal clock tells you when to sleep and when to be awake. That's why shift workers sometimes have slumber issues as they try to sleep opposite that natural rhythm. Ditto with travel and "jet lag", daylight saving time and seasonal changes of light and darkness.
Sometimes nutritional deficiencies make it hard for your body to relax, as in restless leg syndrome. Magnesium is your go to mineral as it relaxes muscles, nerves and blood vessels, aiding in the relaxation response. People who are low in serotonin, a neurochemical that helps regulate sleep may be helped with 5-HTP, a building block of serotonin. GABA is another neurochemical that relaxes and calms a busy mind too alert to fall sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that influences circadian rhythm. If you wake between 1-3 a.m., your body "clock" might be "off". CBD influences many of the pathways for sleep, giving you another option to help your body follow its natural cycle. .
