Beyond the Label

Maximize your benefits and minimize your risks with these helpful tips!


GENERAL GUIDELINES

Allergens. Common allergens noted on labels are corn, dairy, gluten, soy and wheat. No artificial colors or additives in TyH products help reduce the likelihood of allergies also.

Best Used By Date. The date a supplement should be used by to meet label potency for ingredients. The date is the product is lab tested, meaning the lab manufacturing the product keeps samples on hand and tests the product again at the "Best Used by Date" to validate that it still meets label requirements. That is why this date is important to your health and safety to be listed on any product you purchase. 

Blood Thinners. Certain supplements have blood thinning properties while others can increase clotting. If you are on a blood thinner or need any surgical (and some dental) procedures, always share any supplement you take with your health care professional.

Brand Ingredients. These include trademark or patent ingredients that are backed by research and clinical trials to obtain specified results. These specialty ingredients are included in supplements to pass along those benefits to you. 

Color Changes. Products formulated with natural ingredients may vary in capsule or tablet color from lot to lot. Any product with ingredients that may change usually will indicate that color may vary. right on the product label. 

Combining Products. Always check the cumulative dose when taking several different supplements so you do not exceed the daily recommended intake. Dosage amounts are listed in the supplement facts box on the label.

Freshness packets or canisters. Check product label for whether to discard or keep for product stability. Contains silica crystals that are harmless to the product but not to be consumed. Some products require the packet or canister to be left in the bottle, especially after opening which exposes a product to humidity and air.

GMP. Good Manufacturing Practice is a certification program in cooperation with the FDA and the Natural Products Association (the trade organization for supplements). These manufacturing practices set the guidelines and are the gold standard that ensures a product meets label, safety and potency requirements. You can read more in GMP for Me!

Pets. Please check with your veterinarian before giving people supplements to pets.

Pregnancy or Lactation. Before, during pregnancy or breast feeding, proper nutrition is important but always check with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Storage/shelf life. Store supplements in their original containers in a cool, dark place for optimal nutrient protection. Refrigerate as indicated on the label. Use by Best Use By dating on bottle.

Vita-Minders (vitamin cases). Stores supplements for up to 7 days. Freshness packets can be used in containers.

Value. Compare TyH labels with other products. Some one-a-day multiples have minimum amounts of minerals or nutrients (like minerals) are left out. Do a comparison to Multi-Gold™.  Some supplements also claim benefits due to an ingredient but it is in a token amount.  Nutrients such as lutein, CoQ10 and lycopene need to match optimal amounts used in research studies.

SPECIFIC NUTRIENTS - Things to Know Before You Buy
Alpha Lipoic Acid and Chromium GTF™. The two nutrients appear to have an impact on blood sugar response. at certain doses.  Diabetics should check with their health care professional before using to monitor insulin levels. 

Calcium. A maximum of 500 mg calcium can be absorbed by the body at one time. Other nutrients for magnesium absorption are required so calcium should not be taken solo. Magnesium, vitamins D and K all help with calcium transport and regulation.  If you have kidney disease, check with your health care professional before supplementing calcium as it is involved in calcium metabolism.  

Melatonin.  Melatonin is part of your hormone family. If you are under medical supervision seek the advice of your physician or health care professional prior to use. Individuals with auto-immune conditions, depressive disorders, those taking sedatives or corticosteroid drugs, pregnant or lactating women, should consult their physician prior to use. This product may cause drowsiness. Do not operate a vehicle or heavy machinery following consumption of melatonin. Keep out of reach of children.

Valerian Root.  This herb is known to calm an overstressed nervous system and help with relaxation and sleep. Studies used a 0.8% valerenic extract so look for standardization. Consult a physician before use if you are on any medications that affect the central nervous system (CNS).
