"A robust database shows that dietary supplements of vitamins E and C are safe for the general population" states a 2005 extensive review. Both vits C and E offer antioxidant protection against free radicals and perform other functions for human homeostasis so they have been "intensely studied". As a safety guidance, tolerable upper intake levels were established by the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine as 1000 mg for vit E and 2000 mg for vit C in adults. Many clinical trials involve subjects with various diseases and none show adverse effects at any intake. The ascorbic form of C may cause GI distress or diarrhea at higher doses. No bleeding (blood thinning) or adverse effects were found for E in humans. Doses may differ by what you need. I take 3000 mg of buffered C every day in my shake for allergies and suffer no GI ill effects and I'm a petite person!
