Vitamins, the vitality of life.
Vitamins are organic substances that sustain life by their actions within the body. Some convert foods to energy, build and repair cells, tissues and organs, and are cofactors for minerals.
Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) are stored and used on demand. Water soluble vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, pantothenic acid, folate, biotin, vitamin C) are not stored and need a daily intake.
Keep in mind that vitamins often require minerals as cofactors to carry out their health promoting activity. Some vitamins and minerals when taken together also offer a synergistic effect, especially antioxidants that scavenger free radicals which cause cellular damage. Vitamins A, C, E and minerals zinc and selenium perform as antioxidants, for example.
A good multi-vitamin provides the essential vitamins and minerals, antioxidants and more to supplement a healthy diet and complete your health picture. Solo vitamins can be added as needed.
