Melatonin 3 mg 60 Veg Capsules

Summer travel may result in jet lag and poor sleep but for chronic conditions, it means more pain too. A study which tested melatonin 10 mg against the drug amitriptyline showed this sleep supplement improved pain scores in more than one study. Got migraines? Melatonin helps that pain, too.

A 2014 study compared three groups for pain relief and quality of sleep. Group 1 took amitriptyline 25 mg, group 2 took melatonin 10 mg and group 3 took melatonin and amitriptyline. This study was specific to 63 females with fibromyalgia ages 18 to 65 for a period of 6 weeks. The melatonin group scored the best on subject questionnaires for sleep and lower pain index over amitriptyline alone, as well as augmented the results in the combination group. A subsequent 2016 study tested melatonin 3 mg for subjects with migraine against amitriptyline in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Subjects ranged from 18-65 years with a history of at least 2-8 migraine attacks per month. After a 4-week baseline phase, 196 participants were randomized to placebo, amitriptyline 25 mg or melatonin 3 mg, and 178 took a study medication and were followed for 3 months (12 weeks). The primary outcome was to see if the number of migraines could be reduced with secondary end points classifying responder rate, migraine intensity, duration and analgesic use. Headache frequency was reduced on average 2.7 days in the melatonin group, 2.2 for amitriptyline and 1.1 for placebo. Although melatonin was only slightly better than the drug, it was "superior" in some patients who received "greater than 50% reduction in migraine frequency", state the authors. They concluded: "Melatonin 3 mg is better than placebo for migraine prevention, more tolerable than amitriptyline and as effective as amitriptyline 25 mg". A third published commentary in 2017 states "This affordable, over-the-counter hormone is as effective as amitriptyline, causes fewer adverse effects, and may have a surprising added benefit." The authors states that although both the American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society suggest antiepileptic drugs, beta-blockers and amitriptyline for migraine prevention based on evidentiary research, adverse effects, such as excessive sleepiness are frequent complaints of therapy. They further discuss that melatonin is a "practice changer" in that it offers the medical professional an alternative that can be preventative in nature at a low cost for the patient and without the drug side effects.
